I recently joined a webinar hosted by The Green Collective on Urban Composting as I had wanted to find ways to reduce my food waste. When I was staying in New York City, we kept all our vegetable scraps, egg shells, etc. and actively contributed our food scraps to GrowNYC's food scrap/ compost collection at the Greenmarket located in the Upper West Side (near Columbia University) on Thursdays and Sundays. When I came back to Singapore, food prep was no longer the same and I felt guilt when I threw away food scraps that could be composted.

Food waste is a contributor to greenhouse gases and it is important to reduce it. "If food waste goes to the landfill and rots, it produces methane—a greenhouse gas even more potent than carbon dioxide. About 11% of all the greenhouse gas emissions that come from the food system could be reduced if we stop wasting food. In the US alone, the production of lost or wasted food generates the equivalent of 37 million cars’ worth of greenhouse gas emissions." (source: WWF)

In Singapore, due to lack of land, waste is first incinerated and the ash is buried. "On the pro side, burning it cuts down the volume by up to 80 percent (the leftovers go to, you guessed it, the landfill). And the resulting emissions can still be captured to produce power. On the con side, incineration uses energy and produces more carbon emissions than bacterial digestion, plus it pollutes the air." (source: Grist)

Here are are couple of ways where you can reduce your food waste carbon footprint in Singapore:

1. Drop off your food scraps at the Food Digesters at selected hawker centres

These food waste digesters mix the food waste with microbes that digest and decompose the waste into non-potable water that can be used for washing and cleaning. More info on The Straits Times.

Based on the information I have at the moment, the digesters are located at the following hawker centres:

Block 628 in Ang Mo Kio Avenue 4

Tiong Bahru Market

Block 58 in New Upper Changi Road

Block 16 in Bedok South Road

As compared to urban composting, where generally meat and bones are not encouraged as they give off a terribly foul smell during decomposition, these red bins that collect food waste for the food digesters allow almost all kinds of food waste.

These red bins that collect food waste for the food digesters allow meat, seafood, bones, fruits, vegetables, leftovers, rice, noodles and bread. Just make sure not to throw in non-food items such as cutlery, packaging, chemicals, hot liquids.

Interestingly, I am not sure why coconut and sugar canes are not allowed. Perhaps they are too large to be broken down by the food digester...

Remember to store your food waste in your freezer first and when it's too much for your freezer to handle, you can make your way to the hawker centres and dispose them into the red bins.

2. Urban composting in your apartment with a compost bin

I haven't tried this at home but I'm sharing what I learnt from the webinar that could be helpful to some of you who are keen to do your part.

Step 1: Get a compost bin

Firstly, for urban composting, you will need to get a compost bin - they usually look like the above and come with a cover (to prevent pests) and a tap where you can release the liquid. The goal is to break down the food waste in your own backyard, or rather, service yard for most of us, and the result of the decomposition/ fermentation is this "compost juice" that you can dilute and use as fertiliser for plants. The juice is rich in nutrients and you no longer need to buy fertiliser again!

Some tips for composting at home:

Cut foods into smaller pieces to speed up the decomposition process. Even egg shells.

Anything can go into the compost, but it is recommended to keep to vegetable scraps, fruit, fruit peels, egg shells, coffee grounds. Do not throw in bones, rotting food, excess fluid and oil into your compost bin. You can also add sugar to give the bacteria energy to quicken the break down process.

Always cover the bucket or bin to prevent pests.

Put a large paper towel at the bottom before you throw in your first food scraps to avoid have coffee grounds getting stuck at the tap area. You can always layer your food scraps with paper towels now and then to filter the juice that comes out of the tap.

You can also add a compost accelerator (such as calcium carbonate) to speed up the process.

It will take about 3 to 4 days for the compost juice to form. Signs of fermentation include condensation, white mould and a sweet pickled-vinegary odour. White mould is your friend. If you get green or blue mould and the compost bin smells like death, it means that you got a spoiled bucket and the fermentation is not happening as it should. Frequent draining of the juice is important and before you use the juice on your plants, you must dilute it with water (minimally 1 part juice to 100 parts water).

The scraps need to be left in the compost bin for about 2 weeks to fully ferment. If the compost bin is full and you have new scraps, you can always store them in the freezer compartment first.

When the bin is full and done with fermenting, here's what you can do with the leftover scraps:

Compost it in your garden (but since this article is about composting within apartments, I think it's not very relevant so I shall not elaborate)

Build your own soil factory. Fill a vessel with soil and bury the scraps for 6 weeks. Feed the fertile soil to your plants at home!

Pass it on to someone else who can use the scraps (e.g. Urban Farmers or your local community garden if you have one nearby)

Dispose it as regular trash. You have done your part in reducing the carbon footprint and reducing the food waste that goes to trash. Don't feel guilty about it!

Most of the urban composting information came from the webinar that I mentioned at the very beginning.

While I am passionate about urban composting, I do have a lack of space in my service yard. I think I might very well start by contributing my food waste to the hawker centres first.

If you know of other ways to reduce food waste in Singapore please leave them in the comments!
I do understand the pain of searching for that perfect dress for your wedding or pre-wedding photoshoots but to avoid splurging on them, mainly because you'll probably wear them once and can't find an occasion to wear them again. In Singapore, the most formal occasion that you'll probably be invited to (if you're not a socialite) would be weddings, and even for weddings, you won't want to wear white and clash with the bride (an absolute no, no).

So here's my list of affordable pre-wedding photoshoot dresses that are so pretty that they can also pass off as wedding or solemnisation dresses. All dresses below are in Singapore dollars and can be bought online from Singapore.

Flutter sleeves

I so love the cutting of flutter sleeve dresses because they remind me of the dress on Olivia Newton John when she was at the dance in Grease. Hers was actually a white spaghetti strap white dress with a chiffon shoulder wrap - a classic! Her white outfit could actually pass off for a wedding dress today, if only someone could recreate it...

Now and then I do have thoughts related to marketing, but putting it all down into a post seemed daunting for some reason. Anyway, that is a story for another day. Today, it's about Skippy Peanut Butter.

To be honest, I was never really a peanut butter person. I liked my bread plain, toasted and I have a very weird pattern of eating my plain toasted bread (I am not elaborating it here lest it gets mocked 😜). However, my husband, is such a peanut butter fan. He is so consistent that whenever I see a flavour for anything that is peanut butter, that would be his pick. Strangely though, for 5 years, we have not bought any peanut butter for our kitchen but we finally succumbed to it during this covid-19 lock down period. We went to the supermarket for the first time in a month and during our stop at NTUC, bought peanut butter.

Skippy is a household brand, so naturally I went for it. Then, I noticed that apart from the small plastic container, that I'm sure everyone recognises even if you don't buy it, there was now an option for a squeeze pouch version. I'm always up to trying something new and wondered if the new packaging would make my experience more pleasant.

This is the one we picked out - the Skippy Peanut Butter squeeze pouch (pic from peanutbutter.com.sg)

I was hungry last night and decided to put some peanut butter on toast. I tend to squeeze the tail end of the toothpaste (people with OCD will appreciate) and I did the same for this squeeze pouch. However, when I squeezed the end flat, I realised that the bottle would not stand upright anymore. It also took quite a bit of effort to squeeze out the first bit of peanut butter.

Squeezing it from the bottom doesn't really work for me. The pouch can't stand upright because the base is flattened. (pic taken by author)

Then I noticed a hole at the corner... is this for people to hang up their peanut butter with an S-hook? Why the hole though? (pic taken by author)

I also found that the spout where the peanut butter is squeezed out from is much too thick and makes a very thick layer of peanut butter. I then used my butter knife to spread the peanut butter all over my toast, which would be what I would have done anyway if it came in a tub.

I found a news article of the launch of the packaging here: https://www.businesstoday.com.my/2019/05/03/launch-of-the-new-skippy-squeeze-pouch/

<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">Earle F. Rabe, Sales and Marketing Manager, Asia Pacific, Hormel Foods International Corporation, said “This new packaging of Skippy was designed to deliver the brand’s promise of ‘spreading simple fun’ by letting consumers enjoy quality peanut butter in an easy squeeze pouch. We are happy to partner with DKSH because of its vast range of capabilities in multiple channels, be it retail, food service or ecommerce.”

I guess if it's a family with small kids, dropping this pouch would shock the parents less as compared to if the plastic tub fell. The peanut butter was great, but apart from the light packaging, I'm not sure how fun or easy this was as compared to the tub.

When I was spreading it on my bread I realised why I did not enjoy spreads on my toast - it was because I would have to wash up my butter knife. An extra utensil to clean. I am lucky to have a dishwasher (even if it's a half load one) during these times of confinement, but I am sure every other person who has to do the dishes always tries to minimise the number of utensils/dishes used.

This then gave me an idea! What if we incorporated a "spreader" tip into the packaging? You can squeeze, spread and cap it back. No need for a butter knife!

An extremely basic and preliminary concept of what I have in mind is drawn below.

I feel that my version would be more in-line with Skippy's brand promise of "spreading simple fun" when the product actually does the action of spreading.

What do you think? Would you use this?

- peg

I did all my planning a la carte style so renting a wedding gown just for a pre-wedding shoot was rather troublesome, plus I probably wouldn't be able to get many gown changes unless I paid more. With lifestyle shoots being the "in" thing right now, I started to think about buying dresses off the rack.

I still wanted to look like a bride-to-be, so white was the colour I was going for. However, the dresses shouldn't look like a gown and it also shouldn't look too plain. While I picture myself in white, I have planned for my fiance to be in a white shirt (folded sleeves) ans jeans.... :)

In my search for suitable and affordable pre-wedding shoot outfits, I chanced upon a few that I think would be helpful to those who have the same idea. Hopefully this would help brides-to-be in Singapore in their search for their perfect non-gown pre-wedding shoot dresses.

1) Maxi, sheer, lace with a bohemian twist. When it smudges or stains the teeth, my night is literally over. Who knows how long my friends have been staring at those clownish lips for? And the many times my compact mirror needs to be flipped so that I can check if the lipstick is intact...

In fact, I've always been more of a gloss kind of girl. The closest I've been to lipstick is when Chanel launched their Rouge Coco range - which felt more like coloured lip balm. It was comfortable and the colour was natural but it didn't have that much intensity.

When my friend introduced Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet in number 38 La Fascinante, my life changed.

Image from chanel.com

It looks pinkier on screen but it definitely is a red. Intense red lipstick.

This is the first lipstick that almost comes packaged with compliments. I have worn other red lipsticks before but this, only this, will people sit up and notice.

I usually only wear this shade of red for special occasions, like for an event or wedding dinner. And guests at the wedding have always asked me about this lipstick and are impressed by how lasting it is even halfway through a Chinese wedding dinner.

The texture is great, easy to apply and lasting. Most importantly, I usually forget that it's on - it's that comfortable!

I have recommended this particular lipstick in this shade to my friends and colleagues and it suits all of them! We all work in the office and have regular to fair skin tones. It makes for a great gift as well since this red is so easy to wear.

Unfortunately I recently misplaced this lipstick at a friend's wedding :( I'm definitely heading down to the counter to get another one soon.

What's your favourite red lipstick? :)
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-677677329556393762.post-10666941713813937202014-03-09T18:54:00.001+08:002014-03-09T19:54:22.839+08:00Ellen DeGeneres' Twitter Oscars Selfie Sponsored by Samsung? It's all over the entertainment news. Ellen DeGeneres and her legendary Oscar selfie cramped with A-listers featuring Meryl Streep, Jared Leto, Jennifer Lawrence, Channing Tatum, Bradley Cooper (the one holding the phone), Kevin Spacey, Julia Roberts, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt and Lupita Nyong'o.

I've heard and seen so much on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, that same image being shared by my friends in Singapore as well.

Amazing exposure and virality for Samsung - it was a white Samsung Galaxy Note 3 that Cooper used to take the photo.

I've read so many articles on Samsung's $18 million Academy Awards advertising deal and how Ellen's selfie was perhaps not the most spontaneous.

But product placements and brand loyalty only last so long if it's not real. However, being someone who's not too hot on shimmer nail colours, I passed on that.

I'm more keen on matt solid colours.

Hence, this summer's Mimosa really caught my eye! It's been nearly 15 years since Topshop dabbled in the makeup biz, and now the clothing chain is back in action. Starting in May, the British retailer will be selling a range of cosmetics at its top 30 stores, its New York shop, and on its website. The line consists of both permanent and seasonal collections and will include 97 products encased in fun packaging. Topshop designer Lizzie Dawson explains in WWD, "It's playful, almost like the Topshop girl drew it herself." The company plans to put out more "experimental" trend collections four to six times a year.

The line will consist of colour palettes inspired by Topshop clothing and accessories, along with a sheer Skin Tint and Skin Glow in lieu of foundation or powder. In addition, there will also be four to six seasonal collections throughout the year that will include a trendier, slightly more adventuresome selection.

Topshop sees colour as a valuable way to appeal to clients in a wavering economy.

"If [shoppers] can't afford a new outfit, then they will go for a new nail polish," Dawson told WWD.

While this is not the retailer's first foray into cosmetics, this venture is new from the ground up.

credits: WWDUnknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-677677329556393762.post-23379786448094611892010-02-26T15:17:00.001+08:002010-02-28T22:13:59.893+08:00CHANEL Les Trompel'Oeil Temporary TattoosCheck this out!
CHANEL Les Trompel'Oeil Temporary Tattoos!
I love them!

I already made my reservation at the Takashimaya beauty counter. So I took out a couple:

oil makeup remover by Bio essence and

Lancome UV Expert sunblock/makeup base SPF50 PA+++.

So here's my review on these 2 products based on the samples I tried. But first, let me clarify that for me to review, I'll definitely have to have some form of comparison. Like you wouldn't know what a good pineapple tart (oh btw, Happy Lunar New Year!) tasted like if you haven't tried a few. You can't say whether something is good if you haven't tried others out there right?

So for the bio essence oil makeup remover, my comparison would be Fancl's mild cleansing oil.

I have to say that the bioessence one pales in comparison. Firstly, it doesn't seem to wash off cleanly. I still feel the oily feeling after I rinsed it off. Not only that, I could see some of the oil stuck between my lashes. and no, it can't remove my Chanel Inimitable Waterproof Mascara. I had to use some random makeup remover (which I found somewhere) to wipe it off instead. Traumatising experience. Fancl's oil makeup remover wins hands-down for sure.

Then there's the Lancome sunblock. For this, the comparison would be Chanel's UV Essentiel.

You know, sunblock is really an essential product in any woman's skincare regime. I remember in the past, when I started to use sunblock (when I was sixteen or so) my first sunblock was the one from Estee Lauder Cyberwhite SPF50. I hadn't tried other sunblocks and I assumed that what I was using was great. That was until I tried Chanel's sunblock, then I converted. You see, it requires high technology to be able to create sunblock that is high in SPF but feels light on your skin at the same time. You'll feel like you forgot you even applied it. Chanel's sunblock's texture is so light, smells great and has SPF50/PA+++. My friend recommends the one from Sunplay. Apparently she says it's even better. Maybe I should try it one day.

So, back to Lancome. Well the texture was light. Water-like and about the same texture as Chanel's. However, after I applied it, it felt so sticky on my skin. When I applied my compact foundation afterwards it really felt a little gross as I could feel my sponge feeling sticky afterwards.

So it seems like I'll stick with good 'ol Chanel and Fancl :)

- blogpress by iPhone

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-677677329556393762.post-69093623792123140282010-02-18T22:25:00.003+08:002010-02-18T22:57:22.893+08:00High Definition MakeupI'm quite surprised at myself (in a bad way) for not knowing what High-Definition makeup was. I just chanced upon it while going through my daily updates on Fashionista.

Going through the story on MAC's new Tabloid Collection, I couldn't figure out what HD makeup was. I only knew that it made people look airbrushed. A quick search on the internet and I found some definitions:

From Beauty and The Blog:

"Originally designed for use in film and television, high-definition makeup provides a flawless, picture-perfect complexion and is invisible to the 6x magnification of high-def cameras (and the naked eye!), thanks to:

innovative, superfine microparticles that blend imperceptibly into skin

photochromatic pigments that react with all types of lighting

The result is skin that looks naturally flawless whether on screen or on the street."

From About.com:

"High definition makeup is almost as popular as mineral makeup. However, the really great thing about high definition makeup is they contain light reflectors and other ingredients to give your skin a flawless finish. This is wonderful when you are taking photographs or working in television, but it is also great for more mature skins. Basically high definition makeup can make your skin not only look flawless, but younger as well."
So high-definition makeup for high-definition TV to conceal flaws and imperfections. And apparently, this isn't new cos most of the brands already have HD mascaras to HD foundations.
But how do you really consider HD as really HD? Or is it just a marketing gimmick once again by the brands?

Like Chanel's foundations all have light-reflecting pigments in them to conceal flaws and minimise the imperfections. But they've never really used the term HD to describe their foundations. So how or what ingredients/makeup results should these products produce before they are termed as HD cosmetics?

Anyway, the collection launched by MAC is called Tabloid Collection:

image from Fashionista.com

I'll definitely check it out to see how different it is from the other non-HD cosmetics. Not sure when it's launching in Singapore though.

Let me know when you've tried it!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-677677329556393762.post-30762308830540169582009-02-15T21:21:00.003+08:002009-02-15T21:36:15.387+08:00(2) New Product Idea for... PerfumeWe all know that the best places to spray your fragrance is behind the ears, at the wrist area, some say at the neck.. and so on.

And we all know that it is strongly discouraged to spray fragrance on your clothes. Because as time goes by, it may result in staining of the clothes. Thus people spray them on their skin so that it will last longer and react with the individual's skin to have a unique smell.

But seriously, have we all thought about whether the fragrance is good for the skin? I mean, we spray them on our skin almost everyday, but who knows what ingredients are within that bottle of liquid. Alcohol, fragrance and what else? What chemicals are there that we do not know of that could probably be harmful to our skin after prolonged use? When they sell fragrance, do they tell you that it's ok to spray on the skin?

So here comes my new product idea. Or if this already exists, then it could be a new platform or positioning for fragrances.

We could create a whole new perfume that has beneficial effects on the skin. Like, spraying this fragrance on the skin will give you smoother skin over time and at the same time makes you smell nice!

The perfume could have moisturizing effects on the skin. How cool is that... ;)

So what do you think?Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-677677329556393762.post-37293280344863939602009-02-12T22:01:00.005+08:002009-02-12T22:54:35.761+08:00Pepsi ManiaPepsi seems to be getting quite a lot of attention lately. First, it was the link of Pepsi's new logo to Obama's campaign logo. Some have said that Pepsi got it's inspiration from Obama, but it seems that Pepsi's management have tried to imply that it was the reverse. Watch it here (video from Adage).

Whatever the case... Been meaning to blog about this but it just slipped my mind until I rummaged through the pictures in my iPhone.

Most cab-takers probably already realized that several cabs in Singapore have been installed with TV, more specifically, iCabTV.

At first, I thought it was interesting to have some entertainment on the go. So I tried pressing on a few buttons to see how this thing worked. Not too bad... not only is the screen a mobile tv but it also doubles up as a digital street directory, informing passengers of the nearest atm machine, shopping malls etc.

I think I played with the buttons for about 5 mins before I stopped. Cos having to sit up and go against the force of a moving vehicle is just too tiring. So I just sat back, relaxed, and tried to focus on whatever was on screen at that moment. Quite difficult when the cab driver had the RADIO on AT THE SAME TIME.

Saw an ad where I could win a t-shirt with Luo Zhi Xiang's signature. Vividly remembered that ad. It was a tourism ad on Taiwan. I even sent in my sms. Cool. Wasted 30 cents within my time in the cab. Haha.

After a while, the tv started to become irritating. The same ads were showing and it was rather loud. Good thing I could adjust the screen settings by pressing a few buttons.

After a longer while, I started to realize that I was ignoring the tv. I was doing what I used to do in the cab. Staring blankly at the moving scenery through the window. Why? Because I was starting to get motion sickness. The same feeling I get when I try to read a book, play iPhone games and watch movies on my iPod on a moving vehicle. At the corner of my eye, the moving images of the screen started to irritate me. The sound just made me feel like banging the screen.

First I muted the tv. Not enough. I figured that I had to turn that stupid thing off. All I had to do was press mute twice. Voila! A black screen stared me back in the face.

RELIEF FINALLY!

As a marketing student, I feel that this is just another pathetic attempt trying to catch consumers on the go.

So what if you are able to chuck a tv in front of consumers? They must be willing to watch the screen and not switch it off. Guess you have to strike those with motion sickness off your list.

And as for the advertisers. Yea, you do know how many TVs they have installed, but are you aware of the numbers of TVs SWITCHED ON? For all you know, they probably have 100 iCabTVs running on the road, but 80% of them are turned off by passengers. Is this the number you want? *shrugs* (this is just an extreme example... these are not facts)

Cons of iCabTV (or you could see these as questions that I have myself)
- How can one watch the TV with both the TV and radio on at the same time? Are you going to say no radio for cabs installed with iCabTV?
- What if one passenger turns the TV off? Will the cab driver switch it on again for the next passenger? If not, how will the next passenger be able to "enjoy" the TV if he sees the contraption for the first time and has no idea how to turn it on?
- Assuming the driver will turn on the TV. But what gives the driver the incentive to listen to whatever is on iCabTV as compared to their long-time old friend - the radio?
- Will iCabTV be able to track how many screens are on or off at any point in time?

Hope advertisers will be more discerning when it comes to this new medium in advertising. I say the best way to find out how popular this form of advertising is, would be to ask the cab drivers directly.

iCabTV.... yay or nay?Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-677677329556393762.post-88685200435160610722009-01-03T22:53:00.004+08:002009-01-03T23:15:00.437+08:00IKEA ad with a tinge of humorSpotted this ad while I was waiting for the bus.

Thought it was quite cute. Let me give you an example. A classic ad which uses babies. This ad was from Parmalat milk. Their campaign's slogan was - "Because we're mammals".

http://www.ciadvertising.org/sa/spring_03/382J/grace/milk_page_nizan.htm

Aren't they cuteeeeee? I especially like the panda baby. Maximum cuteness!!

Yea, so, babies. Babies attract attention ;)

Next, we'll move on to animals! Animals are always cute aren't they? Imagine an ad with this cute lil' hamster. awwwww.....

got this pic from google. link: http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb255/fhat1/hamster.jpg

Actually, I did see an ad recently with a hamster. Can't find it now though, but no worries! I found another ad with a hammie in it. Not a real hamster, but it's ultra hilarious... (or so I think). Haha.

Then the next commercial following the hamster one would be the commercial featuring dogs. Not exactly cute, in fact, one of my friends think it's gross. But most still think that it's rather funny. Enjoy!

Hamster ad - Meteor

Dogs ad - Bridgestone tires

Lastly, what do we have? Yes, sex appeal. I'm sure sex appeal works everytime... especially for men's products. Why, the most searched about subjects online are all porn anyway (it's true!). So it's not much of a surprise.

Remember the PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) ads for their anti-fur campaign? That is one campaign which combines BOTH the animal and sex appeal factors. Feast your eyes on the ads below. I'm sure they caught your attention... no?

Apart from anti-fur ads, I also know of car ads to have sex appeal in them. Car ads mostly (I'm not saying ALL, just mostly) target men anyway. Sex appeal with a touch of humour. Found these 2 ads. One Mercedes and the other BMW. Will leave these commercials to end this post. No? Well, then feast your eyes upon these two videos by Allswell. It's a local made advertisement, which is grossly Singaporean. Not that being Singaporean is bad... No, I definitely don't mean that. But the execution could have been much much better. Having the Singaporean accent is fine (I think), but the actors also looked like this was their first advertisement ever.

Maybe that's Allswell's strategy when they made this commercial. They want people to cringe so that they will talk about it. Well, if that's the case, I think they have succeeded. Haha. But if their strategy was to go all out so that the locals can relate to it... then I'm sorry... it just made my goose pimples pop.

I first chanced upon the first advertisement on TV mobile. My first thoughts were: "no taste". "cheap ad". Definitely not speaking to my generation. The "auntie" generation perhaps. Then when I saw the second ad (my friend from promotional management class showed it to me) I was totally grossed out!! It's not only distasteful, it's lame!

Alright, enough of my putting down of these advertisements. Haha. Judge them for yourself :)

The first part of the sequel. For the unsure, blogshops are just like any other shop, selling just about anything, just that it is set up online.

Being an avid shopper, as well as one who spends time on the internet often, I have seen myself succumb to buying from blogshops. Many a time, my purchases are sweeeeet! I've not met any dead sellers or had any trouble with getting my items. But don't get me wrong... I still shop at retail shops. In fact, I love both :) Blog shops are fun to scroll through when I just don't have the time to step out (when exams are round the corner).

Apart from being a buyer from online shops, I have also tried selling stuff by setting up my own blog shop. It didn't go so well though. Naturally, I prefer buying to selling stuff. Those who buy from blogshops, you may think that it is easy work, but it is a hell lot of work for the sellers.

They have to choose the supplies from the supplier, model and take photos of the clothes, photoshop them (not the clothes but the way they display the clothes in the blogshop) with the price on it so that it looks appealing. It is TIME CONSUMING. Period.

Having been on both sides of the spectrum, here are some tips to set up a good blogshop :) Hope blogshop entrepreneurs out there would find these tips useful.

Have big, visible and clear pictures - helps the buyer to analyse the clothes more closely.

Have a model to model your clothes - the buyer is able to see if the dress looks nice overall.

Constantly update your collections - this gives people more incentive to visit your shop. if the time lag is too long, your customers may forget about you. It takes more effort to get them back!

Have a mailing list - notify your customers when you have new clothes/stuff. great form of alert and update!

Always give clear dimensions of your items - buyers will be able to estimate the size from their existing clothing and have a clear idea if it will fit them. (most impt right?)

Make sure that the colour portrayed is true on the screen - you don't want your customer to flip when she thought the dress was blue but is purple when she receives it. and no... you can't blame the flashlight for the error (not acceptable!).

Mail the item promptly - like standing retail shops, the best service always comes up tops. the service for online shopping is important for repeat purchases too!

Always be nice when replying emails - that is the only form of contact with your customer so be nice! you don't want them to give you bad word-of-mouth (WOM). especially when WOM is how blogshops are successful.

Reply emails promptly - you don't want the customer to think that you are not interested.

Advertise to the best of your ability - you don't necessarily have to PAY for advertising. put your blogshop's url on your msn nick. write on the walls of your friends' profiles on facebook. email all your friends in your email contact list. in essence: SPREAD THE WORD!

Get feedback from your customers - it is important to know what you are doing wrong so that you can improve right?

Wrap your items safely and nicely to post out - the packaging of how the customer receives it reflects on the image of your blogshop. Handwriting should be neat or words should be best printed.

Always write your disclaimers and prices for items/postage clearly on the blogshop - no chance of miscommunication there.

Have bank accounts of popular banks - in singapore, that would be UOB and POSB/DBS. make it easy for the customer to buy from you! don't add any deterrence.

I'm sure that this list is not exhaustive, but I believe that these points are what is needed to kick start a great blogshop. Do comment if you have other tips to share!

To end this post, I shall now share 2 local (i.e. SG) blogshops of which I have bought items and gotten great service from. Effective word-of-mouth :)

http://www.acrossthebloodyuniverse.com/

http://vogueinflowers.livejournal.com/

http://thestylemaven.livejournal.com/

P.S. Grammatical errors get to me. So when I saw the copy for this, I couldn't help but put this up.

"You can't missed it"??

Shouldn't it be: "You can't miss it" instead OR "You couldn't have missed it"?

Find it strange that they even published something like this. I mean, people are not perfect, and everyone has made his/her grammatical mistakes before. But the fact that you're going to publish this as an ad, shouldn't someone have checked it? Also, the copy is only a one liner, not like you could have missed the error. Odd.

Unless some of you think otherwise--that it isn't a grammatical error. Then you'll have to explain why. Cos I see it... I see it very clearly. It's a mistake there.

We can see that Perrier is/was the sponsor for the Her World golf challenge. Didn't the magazine people vet it? Really baffles me. *shrugs*

This post is not meant to put any company or anyone down. It is just a one-off ad which was observed and commented upon. No offense intended whatsoever. Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2
