How to reduce food waste in Singapore and start urban composting in an apartment

Pic source: Composting Kampung I recently joined a webinar hosted by The Green Collective on Urban Composting as I had wanted to find ways to reduce my food waste. When I was staying in New York City, we kept all our vegetable scraps, egg shells, etc. and actively contributed our food scraps to GrowNYC 's food scrap/ compost collection at the Greenmarket located in the Upper West Side (near Columbia University) on Thursdays and Sundays. When I came back to Singapore, food prep was no longer the same and I felt guilt when I threw away food scraps that could be composted. Food waste is a contributor to greenhouse gases and it is important to reduce it. "If food waste goes to the landfill and rots, it produces methane —a greenhouse gas even more potent than carbon dioxide. About 11% of all the greenhouse gas emissions that come from the food system could be reduced if we stop wasting food. In the US alone, the production of lost or wasted food generates the equivalent o...

Updated: Affordable pre-wedding photoshoot dresses under $70

I last posted about this topic in 2014 and it seems to be one of my more popular posts! I do understand the pain of searching for that perfect dress for your wedding or pre-wedding photoshoots but to avoid splurging on them, mainly because you'll probably wear them once and can't find an occasion to wear them again. In Singapore, the most formal occasion that you'll probably be invited to (if you're not a socialite) would be weddings, and even for weddings, you won't want to wear white and clash with the bride (an absolute no, no). So here's my list of affordable pre-wedding photoshoot dresses that are so pretty that they can also pass off as wedding or solemnisation dresses. All dresses below are in Singapore dollars and can be bought online from Singapore. Flutter sleeves I so love the cutting of flutter sleeve dresses because they remind me of the dress on Olivia Newton John when she was at the dance in Grease. Hers was actually a white spaghetti st...

Affordable pre-wedding shoot dresses (below $70)

As I'm planning my wedding, I thought about our pre-wedding photoshoot and what I should wear. I did all my planning a la carte style so renting a wedding gown just for a pre-wedding shoot was rather troublesome, plus I probably wouldn't be able to get many gown changes unless I paid more. With lifestyle shoots being the "in" thing right now, I started to think about buying dresses off the rack.  I still wanted to look like a bride-to-be, so white was the colour I was going for. However, the dresses shouldn't look like a gown and it also shouldn't look too plain. While I picture myself in white, I have planned for my fiance to be in a white shirt (folded sleeves) ans jeans.... :) In my search for suitable and affordable pre-wedding shoot outfits, I chanced upon a few that I think would be helpful to those who have the same idea. Hopefully this would help brides-to-be in Singapore in their search for their perfect non-gown pre-wedding shoot dresses.  1) Maxi, s...

Singapore Spam Law

Please refer to The Manila Times for the whole article. The draft Spam Control Act aims to control the electronic commercial messages sent in bulk by email or to mobile phones, according to the bill seen on Tuesday. It was introduced to parliament on Monday and must undergo further consideration by legislators. Unsolicited messages will have to include an address or number to allow the recipient to unsubscribe and messages must clearly identify themselves as advertisements, the bill says. This bill has been working OK so far with majority of the advertisers whose ads I've received from my mobile phone. ALL... except one. Anyone ever received Spam ads from The Arena??? I figure from its ads that it's a local club of some sort. Where the hell is that place anyway? I've received so many of its ads (the frequency probably that of about 2-3 times a month) and its pissing me off. Yes, it has that advertisement sign at the beginning of its message, but it doesn't allow me to...

Mercedes Benz as Taxis

There was an interesting question posed in my product and brand management course some time back, and it was on cars - Mercedes Benz to be exact. The question was similar to,"Why is it that even though Mercedes E-class is now used as taxi, but it doesn't seem to affect its positioning as a premium car brand? Also, it seemed to have little effects on its sales... why is this so?" So, naturally, I approached my dear friend chris for some of his opinion. (It's about cars... who's a better person to approach? heh) But first, I would like to say that (this is input from chris) having the E class as a cab in Singapore did affect the sales of it in a way. There are people who bought E classes but changed to other brands, such as BMW, when they realized that it was used as a cab. Also, you do realize that people in Singapore will rarely buy a white E class... because they don't want to be mistaken for a cab :p Anyway, here are some of the points consolidated from Chr...
