Singapore Spam Law

The draft Spam Control Act aims to control the electronic commercial messages sent in bulk by email or to mobile phones, according to the bill seen on Tuesday. It was introduced to parliament on Monday and must undergo further consideration by legislators. Unsolicited messages will have to include an address or number to allow the recipient to unsubscribe and messages must clearly identify themselves as advertisements, the bill says.


This bill has been working OK so far with majority of the advertisers whose ads I've received from my mobile phone. ALL... except one.

Anyone ever received Spam ads from The Arena??? I figure from its ads that it's a local club of some sort.

Where the hell is that place anyway?

I've received so many of its ads (the frequency probably that of about 2-3 times a month) and its pissing me off. Yes, it has that advertisement sign at the beginning of its message, but it doesn't allow me to unsubscribe at all!

I tried replying to that message, but there's no reply number. It only shows TheARENA as the number, which obviously is not applicable.

Sigh. If anyone sees this, please let them know of the Spamming Bill.

Urgh.

The bill gives recipients of unwanted messages the power to launch civil court action against violators, who could be liable for damages up to 25 dollars (16 US) for each message.

Wow! Maybe I should just store up their messages and bring them to court! Haha. I can get some pocket money too!

Hmmm... that's a nice thought.

But I'll give them one more chance. If they don't see this blog post and send me more messages, then I'll just have to report them. It's REALLY irritating.

Imagine this: You are waiting for your bf to sms you, or waiting for your friend to reply an urgent message. Then you get Spam msgs... which you cannot unsubscribe!

Anyway, just one more chance for The Arena. That's it.

oh the arena. it's a club in the cannery. i used to go for vip invites and its funny how they always want me to key my paticulars in their system. then i realised that they send me sms-es informing me about events coming up. i'm not certain what spam messages they've sent you..perhaps you did sign up for club's subscription but you just don't recall it?

perhaps. but even then, they're supposed to allow us to unsubscribe. it's like I don't have a choice if I give them my particulars but to receive updates from them forever? Doesn't sound reasonable does it? Even for mailing lists via email, they provide an avenue for you to unsubscribe to their newsletters after you've chosen to receive updates from them. I feel that it's only appropriate =)

Do you like Shark's Fin Soup?

There has always been talks about how fishermen leverage on the huge market for the consumption of sharks' fins and throw the dying shark back to the water after snipping off their fins, aka "live-finning". Localization of Advertisements

We all know that localization is important. Because it will be more relevant to the people looking at the ad. You can even see that from online marketing. For example, I signed up for Yahoo! email using yahoo.com instead of yahoo.com.sg, just because I thought the "sg" didn't look as cool.
